5 Habits For Healthy Eyes

Whether you’re getting ready for your laser vision correction procedure, have already completed it or just want to learn more about keeping your eyes in top shape, read on!

Avoid rubbing your eyes

Be gentle with your eyes because forcibly rubbing them can do more harm than good, especially right after surgery when your eyes are more vulnerable to infection. Rubbing can also scratch the surface of your eye and, over time, change its shape, which could permanently affect your vision. Avoid rubbing your eyes if they are irritated or itchy. Instead, use lubricating or medicated eye drops, under the advice of an eyecare professional.

Wear sunglasses

The sun’s rays can lead to cataracts, macular degeneration, and other harmful eye conditions so pick up a pair of stylish sunnies that block 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB rays when spending long hours under the sun.

Give your eyes a break from screens

Work at a computer all day? Follow the 20/20/20 rule: every 20 minutes, stare at something 20 feet away, for at least 20 seconds. At home, reduce your screen time and set your devices to night-time mode to reduce your blue light exposure.

Schedule those eye exams

Regular eye exams aren’t just important for checking your vision, they can also scan for more serious eye diseases and underlying health conditions, like diabetes.

Check your makeup and toiletries’ expiration dates

Expired makeup, shave gel, lotions, and other toiletries can be a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. Check your containers for the “open jar” icon with a number inside. The number indicates how long the product is good for, usually in months.
