Educational Background
Dr. Omar Hakim received his medical degree (cum laude) from the University of Western Ontario in 1987 before completing a residency in ophthalmology at the Ivey Institute of Ophthalmology in London, Ontario. He was later named a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1991 and has been practicing ophthalmology ever since. In 2006, he was appointed corneal fellow at the Queen Victoria Hospital and the Centre for Sight in East Grinstead, United Kingdom.
Dr. Hakim has been performing laser vision correction surgery since 1994 and he is regarded as a leading international specialist in refractive surgery.
During his career, he has served as the principal clinical investigator for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in several wavefront-guided technology studies. Some of these studies were conducted in conjunction with the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science, where he held the post of adjunct professor.
Dr. Hakim has performed vision correction procedures at TLC Laser Eye Centres clinics in London, Waterloo, and in Toronto where he was the regional medical director. Since 2007, he has also been performing laser vision correction at LASIK MD clinics in the Greater Toronto Area.
Dr. Hakim is a well-respected lecturer who has given many talks and presentations at ophthalmology conferences in Canada, the U.S., Europe, and Asia. He has performed live surgical demonstrations at the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Footage of his surgical techniques have been used by ophthalmic companies to educate other surgeons.
Additionally, Dr. Hakim has been involved in extensive research projects in the field of ophthalmology, with an emphasis on corneal and refractive surgery. He has previously published articles and acted as a reviewer on the editorial review board of the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He is a contributing author for two of the world’s best-selling laser vision correction textbooks and has served as consultant to the International Medical Advisory Board of Alcon Laboratories.
