What is the EVO Implantable Collamer® Lens (ICL)?
The EVO Implantable Collamer® Lens, or EVO Visian ICL™, is an intraocular lens designed to provide premium visual outcomes for patients with high myopia (nearsightedness). These artificial lenses are made from a soft, pliable material called Collamer®, which is a biocompatible collagen polymer that offers UV protection.
Approved for use by Health Canada, the EVO Visian ICL™ lens is a solution for the correction or reduction of high myopia and astigmatism.
Who is a good candidate for the EVO Visian ICL™?
The EVO Visian ICL™ is a good alternative for patients with high myopia, and who are not eligible for laser refractive surgery.
What are the steps involved with the EVO Visian ICL™ procedure?
EVO Visian ICL™ is a simple and straightforward type of vision correction procedure. The first step patients should take is to book a free consultation, during which our eye care professionals will determine your candidacy. Once you have been deemed eligible for this procedure, the next step will be coming in for your surgery. The procedure is short and takes just 10-15 minutes per eye.
The steps that you can expect with your EVO Visian ICL™ procedure are listed below:
First, the surgeon uses eye drops to dilate your pupils—please note that this step may trigger some light sensitivity. Pupil dilation may also cause blurred vision in the first four to six hours following administration of the drops, particularly at near distances. Then, eye drops will be used to anesthetize your eyes.
The surgeon will then create a small incision at the base of the cornea. This is where the EVO Visian ICL™ lens will be inserted behind the iris, the coloured part of the eye. It will be positioned directly in front of the natural crystalline lens.
The lens will then be properly inserted and positioned.
After rest, most patients will be able to return to their day-to-day routine in the 24 hours after surgery. Please note that patients will not, under any circumstance, be allowed to drive home following their procedure and must arrange for transportation ahead of time.
Patients will be required to undergo a follow-up appointment in the first 24 hours following their surgery. After this, regular post-operative appointments must be respected in the first year. Then, the patients can return to the clinic annually for their check-ups.
EVO Visian ICL™ is a beneficial option for a number of reasons:
- It corrects high myopia that laser refractive surgery cannot treat
- The procedure is quick and minimally invasive
- Patients notice a visual improvement right after surgery
- The procedure doesn't induce dry eye syndrome1
- The EVO Visian ICL™ is completely removable, allowing patients, as well as their ophthalmologist, to make changes whenever applicable.
What are the alternatives to this procedure?
Eyeglasses and contact lenses are both safe and relatively inexpensive nonsurgical alternatives. For patients who qualify, refractive lens exchange (RLE) can be seen as an alternative to the EVO Visian ICL™ procedure as well.
