What is ICL surgery?

An Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) is a micro-lens that works with your eye’s natural anatomy to deliver sharp, high-definition vision. It is an ideal solution for high prescriptions or thin corneas, especially for those who aren't candidates for LASIK. The procedure takes only minutes, and the lens can be safely removed or upgraded if your vision changes down the road.

Implantable Collamer® lenses are designed to provide premium visual outcomes for patients with high myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness). These artificial lenses are made from a soft, pliable material, which is a biocompatible collagen polymer that also offers UV protection.

Are there different types of ICL procedures?

The procedure is the same as a myopic implantable Collamer® lens procedure, but with the added step of having to undergo a short procedure beforehand. The first step is to undergo a laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI), one to four weeks prior to your lens implantation.

During the LPI procedure, the surgeon will create tiny openings in the outer edge of your iris, which will allow your eye to maintain its pressure after your new lens has been placed. After the LPI, you will be required to put drops in for four days. The healing period for the LPI is relatively quick so you will have been booked for your lens implantation soon after.

After this, you will be ready for your lens implantation, which follows the same steps as the myopic implantable Collamer® lens procedure below.

What to expect during ICL surgery

Lens implantation is quick and straightforward, taking just 10 to 15 minutes per eye.

Your surgeon will apply eye drops to dilate and numb your eyes. You may notice temporary light sensitivity or mild blurriness for a few hours afterward — this is completely normal.

The surgeon will create a small incision at the base of the cornea. This is where the lens will be inserted behind the iris, the coloured part of the eye. It will be positioned directly in front of the natural crystalline lens. The lens will then be properly inserted and positioned.

Most patients will be able to return to their day-to-day activities in the 24 hours after surgery. Please note that you cannot be allowed to drive home following your procedure and must arrange for transportation ahead of time.

A check-up will be scheduled within 24 hours, and regular follow-up visits are required during your first year to ensure your eyes are healing properly.

Can I get ICL if I have dry eyes?
