LASIK MD Doctors Publish Ground-Breaking Research On The PanOptix Toric Trifocal Intraocular Lens

LASIK MD is proud to work with some of the most talented ophthalmologists in Canada and the United States, many of whom participate in innovative research in the field of refractive ophthalmology. We’re proud to announce that several of our doctors, including LASIK MD co-founders Dr. Avi Wallerstein and Dr. Mark Cohen, recently had a ground-breaking paper published in the Journal of Refractive Surgery, which underscores the revolutionary power of a special type of intraocular lens for refractive lens exchange (RLE) procedures.

RLE is a type of eye surgery during which the eye’s natural lens is replaced with an artificial lens, similar to cataract surgery. It’s often a good alternative for individuals who aren’t candidates for procedures like LASIK or PRK. The type of lens used in RLE is crucial because it directly impacts the clarity and quality of vision after the surgery. Different lenses offer various advantages, such as correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, and some lenses even offer multifocal or toric options, which can reduce the need for glasses or contacts after the procedure. Choosing the right lens often depends on factors like the patient's eye condition, lifestyle preferences, and visual needs.

The advancements made in ophthalmology over the years has resulted in a wider range of lenses available to RLE patients than ever before. Titled “Toric Trifocal Intraocular Lens for Refractive Lens Exchange: A Multi-center, Multi-surgeon Large Cohort Study,” the purpose of the study was to evaluate how well a special type of lens – the PanOptix toric trifocal intraocular lens – works for people with corneal astigmatism who are candidates for a refractive lens exchange.

The Significance Of The Study

In general, toric trifocal intraocular lenses are specialized artificial lenses implanted during RLE surgery to correct both astigmatism and provide clear vision at multiple distances. The research conducted by LASIK MD doctors is significant because it underscores the overall benefits of the PanOptix toric lens, and how it can offer patients improved clarity for near, intermediate, and far distances.

During the study, over 4,900 eyes were evaluated with a median follow-up of 3 months. The results showed that the PanOptix toric IOL provided excellent visual outcomes, with 65% of eyes achieving 20/20 distance vision and 87% achieving 20/20 vision binocularly. Additionally, the lens showed high rates of success in providing clear vision at intermediate and near distances. Most notably, the study found that a significant percentage of patients achieved effective uncorrected vision for daily activities at various distances, thereby reducing (and in some cases even eliminating) their dependency on glasses or contacts.

These findings are important for anyone considering RLE as it demonstrates the efficacy and reliability of the PanOptix lens in enhancing overall visual quality and lifestyle post-surgery, particularly for people suffering with astigmatism.
