Dr. Palakkamanil earned his MD from the University of Calgary before completing his ophthalmology residency at the University of Alberta, where he served as chief resident. He further expanded his expertise by obtaining a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Epidemiology from Harvard University and completing a prestigious glaucoma fellowship at Dalhousie University. His rigorous training focused on advanced diagnostics and complex surgical management under the mentorship of internationally recognized leaders in the field.

His surgical expertise includes a wide array of glaucoma procedures, including traditional trabeculectomies and glaucoma tube shunts to cutting-edge minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) such as iStent, Xen, GATT (gonioscopic-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy) and Kahook dual blade. His practice also includes cataract surgery using advanced intraocular lens technology, as well as refractive procedures such as PRK and LASIK .

Dr. Palakkamanil is currently appointed as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta, where he is actively involved in the training of medical students, residents and fellows. A prolific contributor to medical literature, Dr. Palakkamanil has authored numerous peer-reviewed studies and chapters in prominent texts including the Duke Manual of Glaucoma Surgery, Canadian Journal Ophthalmology, as well as Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science (IOVS). His accolades include “Best Oral Presentation” honors from the University Eye Foundation, University of Alberta Hospital Foundation Research Grant, and a Department of Ophthalmology Surgical Teaching Award (2026).
