Dr. Kenman Gan was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. He completed his medical degree, followed by five years of specialization in ophthalmic surgery, at the University of Alberta. While working at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, he served as the chief resident in ophthalmology.
Dr. Gan specialized in laser refractive surgery, and has performed thousands of ophthalmic procedures at laser eye surgery centres in Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo, Surrey, Edmonton and Calgary.
Dr. Gan is experienced with many types of refractive surgery technologies including the Bausch and Lomb Z100 excimer laser, the Alcon Wavelight Allegretto Eye Q excimer laser, the Ziemer Crystalline femtosecond laser, and the Bausch and Lomb Hansatome microkeratome. He performs LASIK and PRK procedures utilizing both Standard and Advanced Custom Wavefront techniques, and is certified on the IntraLase All-Laser LASIK platform. Dr. Gan is also a LASIK MD clinic medical director.
In addition to his work at LASIK MD, Dr. Gan performs cataract, oculoplastic, and other laser eye surgeries. Dr. Gan is one of only three surgeons in British Columbia experienced with Topography-guided Custom Ablation Treatment (TCAT or T-PRK) and Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking with Riboflavin (CXL or C3R), for treating patients with keratoconus.
Dr. Gan has received numerous awards, including the Dr. T Alistair Boyd Prize in Ophthalmology, the John Proskie Memorial Scholarship in Ophthalmology, and the Reg Martiniuk Ophthalmology Award.
Dr. Gan is extensively involved with ophthalmology research. He has presented at national and international conferences, and his work has twice received the Canadian Ophthalmological Society’s Prize for Excellence in Research – 2nd place in 2009 and 1st place in 2010. He has received research awards from Fight for Sight, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society.
An avid community volunteer, Dr. Gan has been recognized with the Anne Louise Mundell Humanitarian Award, the Laurence Decore Leadership Award, and a Circle K/Kiwanis Western Canada District Leadership Award.
