History of LASIK MD

LASIK MD is Canada’s largest provider of laser eye surgery. Approximately half of all laser vision correction surgeries performed annually in Canada are performed by LASIK MD.

LASIK MD was founded in 2001 by Dr. Mark Cohen and Dr. Avi Wallerstein with one initial clinic in Montreal, Canada. Today, LASIK MD has laser centres across Canada, including the major markets of Montreal, Toronto Downtown, Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver. Its head office is in Montreal. LASIK MD is the largest privately owned medical services firm in Canada with over 700 employees.

LASIK MD Montreal is the principal training centre for LASIK for Canadian laser eye surgeons. Over 100 laser eye surgeons have trained at this facility. It is the only non-hospital based facility in Canada accredited by a licensing body for the training of laser vision correction to ophthalmic surgery residents.

In 1998-2001, as the medical directors of Lasik Vision Corporation, Cohen and Wallerstein had overseen the development of the first “high volume” laser vision correction centers in the North America (high volume meaning more than 100 procedures per week). In 1998, Lasik Vision Corporation was the first laser vision correction provider in North America to offer “affordable pricing” and to market this in its advertising. At the time, this was a novel technique for a medical services company and allowed it to capitalize on a larger mass appeal for the procedure. With rapid growth, this public company became the largest company in the world in laser vision correction, in terms of procedure volume, in 2000.

After an industry contraction in 2000-2001, doctors Cohen and Wallerstein coordinated the acquisition of the LASIK Vision clinics in Canada by private surgeon investors. These clinics became known as LASIK MD.
