Why LASIK Surgeon Experience is Important

Posted on 2014/08/25 at 5:57 pm by LASIK MD

One of the most important factors worth considering when choosing a laser vision correction provider is the experience of your LASIK surgeon. Technology, friendly staff, word of mouth and price are other aspects that you should take into consideration, but choosing an experienced surgeon is one of the best ways to ensure great results.

The Role of the Surgeon in LASIK

While LASIK is often referred to as a “simple” surgery—mostly because it takes less than 10 minutes of operating room time—there is still lots of surgeon skill involved. There are a few very important steps that require a sure hand and knowledge of the procedure.

With LASIK, the surgeon begins by using a suction ring and microkeratome to create a super thin corneal flap. The suction ring ensures that the microkeratome is lined up properly and stays on track so that the flap is perfect.

The surgeon then folds away the flap exposing the corneal bed below; this is the part that is reshaped to correct the patient’s refractive error. A precise laser (it’s capable of etching your name on a strand of hair) is then pre-programmed with the exact amount of tissue to remove based on the patient’s prescription. Finally, the laser is used for 20 to 30 seconds per eye.

The surgeon finishes by smoothing the flap back over the cornea and making sure that there are no folds or wrinkles. It’s a quick procedure, but still requires a skilled and confident surgeon to make sure you get a quality result.

Who is Performing my Surgery?

LASIK MD has a team of over 60 surgeons across Canada. They truly are an elite group of LASIK specialists, having collectively performed over 1 million procedures. These surgeons are leaders in their communities, with many having academic affiliations at medical schools in their provinces, and prominent clinical practices.

Each surgeon completed undergraduate studies, medical school, five years of ophthalmology residency, and many with further subspecialty fellowships. This is followed by advanced specialized training in laser eye surgery, not taught in school. The rigorous LASIK MD proprietary curriculum involves standardized observerships, proctorships, and mentorships with a yearly didactic course. The 60 LASIK MD surgeons work as a cohesive group, sharing their collective clinical knowledge on an ongoing basis, benefiting from being in constant communication with each other. This way of practice is looked upon as the model for future medical care in all fields.
