After years of thinking about getting laser eye surgery I finally took the plunge! I have been wearing glasses and contacts for over 20 years and got to the point where I didn’t want to deal with the hassle anymore. Before the surgery my eyes were about -4.5 with astigmatism. Without corrective lenses my vision was a blur. I couldn’t even read my alarm clock when I woke up in the morning!
In my work as a television anchor I rarely wore my glasses and instead depended heavily on contact lenses. Hosting a morning show meant early 3 a.m. wake up calls, so my eyes became increasingly tired and irritated especially under studio lights. In fact, I had an incident on live TV were my contact lens almost fell out while I was reading a newscast! I traveled a lot for shoots and projects and my eyes took a beating with the jet lag, long hours, and make-up. They became so dry and irritated that I knew I had to do something soon.
I started to research lasik eye surgery and set up consultations with reputable clinics to do my due diligence. I wanted to know if I was a candidate, what the latest technology was, what the risks were, and how many successful surgeries they conducted. I chose to go with LASIK MD in Toronto and had my surgery with Dr. Mark Cohen, one of the co-founders. I based my decision on trust, experience and convenience. They have done over 750,000 surgeries in Canada, but what really clinched it for me was my experience with the staff at the clinic. They were attentive, informed, supportive, and really made me feel comfortable going forward with the surgery.
The procedure took less than 15 minutes to complete. They gave me squeeze balls to help calm my nerves and Dr. Cohen talked to me and made sure I was doing okay throughout the surgery. When the surgery was done I was amazed that I could see clearly.
Life without glasses or contacts is incredible. Sometimes I have to remind myself I don’t have to take out my lenses at night and that these are my eyes now. The results are amazing. I no longer have to deal with the hassle of contact lenses, and now when I wake up I can actually read my alarm clock. It’s a life changing experience especially for someone like me who’s been dependent on glasses and contacts for most of my life.
My advice to anyone considering LASIK eye surgery is to talk to friends who’ve had it, ask them about their experience, and choose a clinic you’re comfortable with since it’s a relationship you will maintain beyond the day of your surgery. I feel great about my experience with LASIK MD and am grateful to Dr. Cohen and his team for giving me the gift of perfect vision.
