My prescription

The refractive error in your vision is quantified in diopters. This number tells you how to correct your vision problem through a prescription for glasses or contact lenses, and it is also used to determine your refractive treatment. The more nearsighted or farsighted you are, the higher your prescription is in diopters.

Your prescription for glasses may be written in three numbers.

Here is an example of a prescription:

1

The first number (-4.00) identifies your degree of nearsightedness or farsightedness. The sign is an indication of whether you are nearsighted (-) or farsighted (+)

2

The second number (-1.50) represents your degree of astigmatism. This can be written as either + or -.

3

The third number (090) represents where the astigmatism is positioned. In this case, the astigmatism is at ninety degrees, or in the vertical axis.

We use your prescription to determine the appropriate vision correction treatment to correct your refractive error. In other words, these numbers determine how much and in what pattern the laser removes tissue from the cornea.
