Educational Background
Dr. Ralph Zabel completed his medical degree at the University of Western Ontario. Following completion of his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Ottawa, Dr. Zabel successfully completed two fellowships in cornea and refractive surgery—one at the Institute of Ophthalmology in London, England and the other at the University of Minnesota.
Refractive Experience
Dr. Zabel was the first Canadian surgeon to treat a patient using the excimer laser. He has performed thousands of advanced custom wavefront procedures, and has extensive experience using the Summit, VISX, Meditec and Bausch & Lomb excimer lasers. Dr. Zabel was a clinical assistant professor at the University of Minnesota and an assistant professor in the department of ophthalmology at the University of Ottawa. In December 2004, Dr. Zabel underwent advanced custom wavefront surgery on both eyes.
Accomplishments and Awards
Dr. Zabel has received numerous awards and fellowships. He he has given many lectures on excimer laser technology and has written numerous articles on the subject for peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Zabel is also a reviewer for prestigious journals such as the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Surgery and the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
