Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease which occurs in 1 in 1000 people and often begins in adolescence and adulthood. Keratoconus causes distorted vision because the cornea – which is normally round – begins to thin and bulge into a cone-like shape.
LASIK MD offers an effective keratoconus treatment called Corneal Cross Linking (CXL). This non-invasive procedure strengthens a weak cornea by “cross linking” the cornea’s collagen fibres. These collagen fibres are increased to slow or halt the progression of keratoconus. The keratoconus treatment will not correct vision, but it can help prevent vision from further deteriorating. In recent years CXL has been combined with an excimer laser treatment to reshape the cornea and reduce the level of astigmatism, myopia or hyperopia. This laser treatment helps to provide a better overall quality of vision while still wearing glasses or contact lenses.
