Educational Background

Dr. Rehan Riyaz was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He obtained his bachelor’s degree with distinction from the University of Manitoba, where he received the Sibyl Inkster Scholarship for having the highest standing in English literature at the university. He went on to complete his medical degree at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He returned to the Prairies to complete five years of ophthalmic surgical training at the University of Alberta, where he served as chief resident. He was awarded the Dr. T. Alistair Boyd Prize in Ophthalmology for superior academic achievement in his graduating year.

Refractive Experience

Dr. Riyaz has performed tens of thousands of ophthalmic procedures. He specialized in LASIK and PRK surgery under the supervision of Drs. Mark Cohen and Avi Wallerstein, two of North America’s most experienced laser refractive surgeons.

In addition to his work at LASIK MD, Dr. Riyaz practices comprehensive ophthalmology in Edmonton. He treats many types of ophthalmic diseases, and has a special interest in helping patients see without glasses after cataract surgery through the use of advanced technology intraocular lenses, such as extended depth-of-focus and trifocal intraocular lenses.

Dr. Riyaz is an associate clinical professor at the University of Alberta, where he teaches medical students and physicians who are specializing in ophthalmic surgery. As director of cataract surgery training at the university, he ensures that graduating ophthalmologists are proficient with the most current cataract surgery techniques and technologies.

Accomplishments and Awards

Dr. Riyaz has a passion for medical education, and has won several awards for his work in teaching ophthalmology residents, including the University of Alberta’s Teacher of the Year Award (2020), the Surgical Teaching Award (2022), and the Mentorship Award (2023).

Appointed to sit on the University of Alberta’s Residency Program Committee, Dr. Riyaz is involved in the selection and evaluation of ophthalmology residents, and helps to shape the curriculum for the university’s ophthalmology residency training program.
