Educational background

Dr. Karolina Chmielewska obtained her medical degree in 2007 at the Université Laval in Quebec City. She completed her residency there in 2012, fulfilling a specialized training in ophthalmology. Throughout her academic career, Dr. Chmielewska was an active member of the student body, acting as political affairs delegate in the Fédération médicale étudiante du Québec (FMEQ) from 2005 to 2006 and the vice-president of external affairs on the Regroupement des étudiants en médecine de l’Université Laval (RÉMUL).

Refractive Experience

Dr. Chmielewska’s expansive knowledge in ophthalmology is displayed in both research-based analytical work and hands-on experience. Since she started working in the field, she has performed over 15,000 ocular procedures. In 2007, Dr. Chmielewska worked as a representative of the Hôpital Saint-François d'Assis within the Association des médecins résidents du Québec (AMReQ) and she later went on to sit as a member of the board of directors of the association. In addition to her procedural work at LASIK MD, Dr. Chmielewska works at the Hôtel-Dieu de Lévis–Centre de santé et de services sociaux Alphonse-Desjardins as an ophthalmologist, focusing her attention in the areas of surgical glaucoma and paediatric ophthalmology. Further to treating her patients, she shadows medical students and resident doctors working at the hospital.

Accomplishments and Awards

Dr. Chmielewska has presented her research in a number of seminars over the years, most recently at Les Journées Ophtalmologiques de L’Université Laval (JOUL) in 2013. Her work focuses mainly on areas like glaucoma treatment and clinical and surgical ophthalmology. Her participation in the group research project titled “Factors Leading to Surgical Revision of Bleb Leaks: A Retrospective Case-Control Study” was presented before the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2012 and her involvement in the “Risk Factors for a Severe Bleb Leak Following Trabeculectomy: A Restrospective Case-Control Study” was published in the Journal of Glaucoma in November of 2014. In 2011, she was the recipient of a bursary from the Vision Health Research Network for her presentation in the field. In 2010, Dr. Chmielewska was awarded the Xalacom prize for her contributions in teaching external students and residents from Université Laval. Dr. Chmielewska was also the recipient of the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for demonstrating academic excellence while a student in 2002.
