Keratoconus Treatments

Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease which occurs in one in 1,000 people and often begins in adolescence and adulthood. Keratoconus causes distorted vision because the cornea – which is normally round – begins to thin and bulge into a cone-like shape.

LASIK MD offers two effective ways of treating keratoconus:

  • Corneal Cross Linking

The first is the Corneal Cross Linking procedure, also known as CXL. It's a non-invasive procedure that strengthens the cornea by "cross-linking" the cornea's collagen fibres through the application of Riboflavin drops and exposure to UV-A light. It's the only keratoconus treatment proven to slow or stop the progression of the disease.

  • Corneal Cross Linking + Topography-guided PRK

CXL alone will not improve your vision. LASIK MD is one of the few centres in Canada that is able to offer the sophisticated CXL + T-PRK procedure. This dual treatment combines the benefits of CXL with an advanced laser procedure called Topography-guided PRK, hence the name CXL + T-PRK. Topography-guided PRK is an advanced technology that allows surgeons to view a highly-detailed map of the eye, providing a guide for extremely precise treatment. The addition of this laser treatment provides keratoconus patients with improved visual acuity.
