Educational Background
Dr. Pierre Demers completed his medical degree at McGill University and then specialized in ophthalmology at the University of Montreal. He did his post-doctoral fellowship training in cornea, cataract and laser refractive surgery at Tufts University in Boston, and in Paris at Hotel-Dieu Hospital (Université de Paris), and the Bichat Hospital.
With over 20 years’ experience in the field, Dr. Demers is one of the most experienced refractive surgeons in Canada. Not only has he performed refractive surgery and given conferences across Canada, but he’s also applied his surgical skills in Boston, Philadelphia, and San Francisco, as well as in Paris, Vienna, Moscow, and Siberia. Dr. Demers has diverse experience in microsurgery of the eye and has published and lectured internationally on laser, cataract, and corneal surgery in addition to corneal topography.
As a recognized Canadian expert on therapeutic uses of the excimer laser, Dr. Demers was one of the first surgeons to use a scanning-spot excimer laser for therapeutic applications on the cornea. Dr. Demers was a cornea specialist at the University of Montreal Hospital Centre (CHUM) where he performed cataract and cornea transplants. He subsequently left the CHUM to concentrate on cataract and refractive surgery.
Dr. Demers previously held a position as Assistant Professor at the University of Montreal teaching cataract and corneal surgery to ophthalmology residents. Between 1999 and 2005, Dr. Demers was also president of a committee formed to evaluate and analyze ophthalmic surgical procedures performed at the CHUM.
As an accomplished researcher, Dr. Demers’ work has been published in a variety of journals, including Techniques in Ophthalmology, the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and Ophthalmic Surgery, Lasers and Imaging Retina.
In addition to his duties at LASIK MD, Dr. Demers is currently involved in research involving topo-guided treatments for irregular corneas. He has also lectured and done research comparing corneal-based refractive surgery versus lens-based refractive surgery (with toric and multifocal lenses).
