Educational Background



Dr. Richard Bains graduated from the University of Manitoba Medical School in 1986 and then attended the University of Western Ontario to complete his internship and residency training. He was named resident of the year in 1990 and honoured with the Hermont award.

After serving as chief resident in his final year of training, he completed a clinical fellowship at Harvard University at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, Massachusetts. While at Harvard University, Doctor Bains was named fellow of the year in 1994, an award he deeply cherishes. Upon returning to Canada, he was fortunate to have trained and studied laser eye surgery with Dr. Howard Gimbel, one of the world leaders in ophthalmology.

Refractive Experience



Dr. Richard Bains was the medical director of Lasik Vision Windsor in Ontario, Canada and brought to the centre a history of leadership and surgical expertise. Now with LASIK MD London, Doctor Bains works with a team of four optometrists who are all highly trained in caring for the laser eye surgery patient. Together, this experienced team strives to give patients the expert care and service they deserve. "I have always valued being able to offer my patients the best care, with the best technology, and I am proud to be able to provide this service at this clinic. We are dedicated to advancing the field of refractive surgery, which will lead to continued excellence in surgical outcomes for patients." Doctor Bains has also performed thousands of Zyoptix wavefront procedures.

In addition to his role as medical director, Dr. Richard Bains is currently assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. He maintains an active practice and excels at teaching surgical skills to ophthalmologists-in-training. Doctor Bains has also served as program director for the department of ophthalmology at the University of Western Ontario.

Accomplishments and Awards



Doctor Bains maintains a commitment to education and research. He has published articles in a variety of ophthalmic journals. He was extremely proud to serve as managing co-editor for "The Atlas of Ophthalmology", part of a five-volume series entitled, "Principles and Practice of Ophthalmology". He has also written a number of chapters in a laser eye surgery textbook authored by Doctor Gimbel in 1999 entitled "LASIK".
