Educational Background

Dr. Omar Hakim received his MD cum laude from the University of Western Ontario in 1987 and completed his ophthalmology residency at the Ivey Institute of Ophthalmology. He has been practicing ophthalmology since 1992. He recently completed a cornea fellowship at the Queen Victoria Hospital and the Centre for Sight in East Grinstead, United Kingdom.

Refractive Experience

Dr. Hakim has been performing laser vision correction since 1994 and he is regarded as one of the leading international specialists in refractive surgery. During his career, he has served as US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Principal Clinical Investigator in several wavefront guided technology studies. He was also a consultant to the International Medical Advisory Board for Alcon Laboratories.

Dr. Hakim has worked in several laser vision correction clinics such as TLC in London, Waterloo and Toronto where he was the Medical Director and at the Herzig Eye Institute where he was Chief of Surgery for Western Ontario. He is currently on staff at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, the Milton District Hospital and the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital where he practices comprehensive ophthalmology.


Accomplishments and Awards

A well-respected lecturer, Dr. Hakim frequently gives talks and presentations at ophthalmology conferences in Canada, USA, Europe and Asia. In fact, he has performed live surgical demonstrations at the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, VideoRefrattiva (Italy) and the Canadian Ophthalmological Society.

Dr. Hakim has done extensive research projects in the field of ophthalmology and more particularly on cornea and refractive surgery. He has published numerous articles and acted as a reviewer on the editorial review board for the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He is a contributing author for two of the world’s best selling textbooks on laser vision correction.
