LASIK MD Laser Eye Surgery – LASIK Vision Correction
LASIK vision correction is one of the most popular elective procedures in North America and the safest in the world. Over 5 million people have undergone LASIK laser eye surgery in North America over the last 15 years! People are choosing LASIK laser vision correction to reduce their dependency on glasses and contacts and regain an active lifestyle. Learn more about the history of LASIK.
The LASIK vision correction procedure involves two steps: creating the flap and reshaping the cornea. In the first step, the laser eye surgeon creates a thin flap of corneal tissue with a precise flap-making instrument, called a microkeratome. This flap is raised and laid back but still attached to the cornea.
For the second step, the laser vision correction surgeon uses a state-of-the-art excimer laser to reshape the cornea by removing a pre-determined amount of corneal tissue. The amount of tissue is determined during the pre-operative assessment. These measurements are typically in agreement with the recent prescription for your glasses and/or contact lenses.
The flap then is replaced and within minutes, the natural forces hold the flap down on the cornea. Within a few hours, the surface layer of the cornea (epithelium) begins to grow over the cut edge of the flap to seal it into position. Within days, collagen bonds form within the cornea around the edge of the flap, permanently sealing it.
This safe and painless procedure generally takes 10 to 15 minutes of operating room time, during which the laser is used for less than one minute on each eye. LASIK laser eye surgery can be used to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.
