Educational Background

Dr. Peter Agapitos attended Queen’s University prior to the completion of his medical degree at the University of Ottawa. After an internship at McGill University, he specialized in ophthalmology at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Agapitos then had further subspecialty training in cornea, anterior segment, and refractive surgery during a two-year fellowship at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Agapitos practiced ophthalmology in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota from 1989 to 1992, and was an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota.

He returned to Ottawa in 1992 in private practice and has developed a successful anterior segment surgery practice focusing on laser vision correction, cataract surgery, and corneal transplants.

Dr. Agapitos is an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Ottawa and is an Active Attending Surgeon at the Riverside Eye Care Centre at the Ottawa Hospital.

Refractive Experience



Dr. Agapitos is a recognized expert in refractive surgery. He has a broad experience with both surgical techniques (epikeratophakia, radial and astigmatic keratotomy, keratomileusis, and clear lens extraction) and excimer laser techniques (PRK, LASIK and LASEK).
He has been performing excimer laser vision correction since 1992 and was the first surgeon in Canada to treat a patient for hyperopia with the excimer laser. He has lectured both in Canada and the USA, and has published many scientific articles in peer reviewed journals, as well as numerous book chapters.
In 1990, he was named to the editorial board of the Journal of Refractive and Corneal Surgery. From 1995 to 2002, he was one of five surgeons in North America to serve on the refractive surgery panel of the committee on ophthalmic procedure assessments of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Accomplishments and Awards



Dr. Agapitos is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, a Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

In 1999, he received the Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Since 2002, he has been Chair of the Section on Ophthalmology of the Ontario Medical Association. He currently serves on the Independent Health Facilities Task force on Ophthalmology of the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons.
