Educational Background
Dr. Donald S. Smallman attended Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where he completed two bachelor’s degrees (in chemistry, with distinction; and medicine), a doctor of medicine degree (with distinction), and a five-year post-graduate residency in ophthalmology for his FRCS(C). Following completion of his residency in 2003, Dr. Smallman was quickly recruited by Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. As an adjunct assistant professor of ophthalmology there, he teaches optics, the basic science of cataracts, clinical medical ophthalmology, and advanced cataract and glaucoma surgery. He is also actively involved in clinical research in glaucoma and cataract surgery.
Refractive Experience
Dr. Smallman came to the LASIK MD in 2004 with the opening of the Kingston clinic. He was trained in refractive surgery techniques by LASIK MD founders Drs. Cohen and Wallerstein, as well as Dr. Mounir Bashour. Dr. Smallman developed and perfected his skills through extensive clinical work at LASIK MD clinics in Kingston, Ottawa, Toronto, Mississauga and Edmonton. In 2007, he becomes medical director of the Kingston clinic.
Accomplishments and Awards
While completing his undergraduate work and throughout medical school, Dr. Smallman was actively involved in basic science research, publishing in several journals, including Nature Genetics. More recently, Dr. Smallman has been active in clinical research and has abstracts, presentations and publications in several fields of ophthalmology, including glaucoma and cataract surgery.
Dr. Smallman has received numerous awards, including the Dr. Harold Ross McKean Award in Ophthalmology from Dalhousie University, the Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine Scholarship for high academic standing, and the Bergman-Porter Studentship from the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation.
